SWEET EASTER!!

We are all looking forward to Easter, especially to have an excuse to indulge ourselves in chocolate eggs or other chocolate treats. In this period of temptation it may be very difficult to resist giving a piece of this exquisite sweet to our companions, but beware! You could be giving them more than they bargained for. Cats and dogs metabolize chocolate a lot slower than us making them highly susceptible to intoxication by the main component of chocolate, theobromine, which is similar to caffeine that can also be found in cola and tea.

It can affect their tummy and guts in the first instance but in more severe cases can also cause seizures and a fatal heart attack. If caught on time we can make them vomit before the symptoms start to appear but it may lead to several days of intensive care. We urge you to please make sure your pets don’t get access to any chocolate, not even the “doggy” chocolates.

This will only make them develop a sweet tooth which will lead to them searching for the real thing and eat it endangering themselves.

THE GOLDEN OLDIES CLUB

With much better diets and veterinary care, and of course much more knowledgeable and caring owners, nowadays our pet companions have a much longer life span. With this in mind we have designed “the golden oldies club” to spot any problems that can start to appear at their mature age and to help them to continue having fun with you for a long time and not to slow down just because they are getting older.

IT ONLY COSTS £30.00

Joining the club will allow them to get the right treatment sooner rather than later if anything starts to crop up, like heart disease, kidney disease, osteoarthritis or diabetes to mention just a few. You will get:

• 3 visits with a nurse
• A clinical examination
• A blood test
• A urine test
• A senior food pack

RACTICE PLAN, A GREAT MONEY SAVER!!!

We are very pleased to offer you a great way to budget your pet’s routine veterinary treatment by paying by direct debit and save you money at the same time, it’s called Practice Plan, tailored to you. The practice plan includes:

• Full clinical examination twice a year
• Annual vaccination
• Worming treatment for 12 months
• Flea treatment for 12 months
• 10% discount of the normal fee for neutering
• 20% discount off of other services provided, including consultation, other vaccinations, surgery, x-rays, etc.

For more information and to register please ask at reception.

STAFF NEWS

Congratulations to Stefanie, one of our 3 qualified veterinary nurses (VN) that has just passed her A1— ASSESSOR exam. That means that she can help Vicky, our part time qualified VN that has been assessing aspiring trainees for the past 4 years, training and marking their work.

Veterinary nurse training is an important part of maintaining RCVS accredited practice status. It also ensures that the trainees have all the experience and knowledge necessary to pass their exams and get well prepared for the future. They work very hard and very close to the trainees to make sure they all understand and learn all aspects of their training.

PUPPY AND KITTTEN CLUB

We are delighted with the great response that our puppy and kitten club has had. There are many puppies and kittens that enjoy the dedicated close attention of our nurses, that allows them to get used to being examined at the practice at regular intervals and for us to see them grow healthily, monitoring their weight and behaviour to make sure its all spot on.

It is a very important period of their life and we like to make sure that the basis for the future is solid so they can have a long and happy life with you.

PET PASSPORT

Hello to all you who are planning taking your pets on holidays or move abroad. We would like to remind you of a couple of things that sometimes cause some confusion:

• Your pet/s has to have an id chip.
• A rabies vaccination must be given.
• 30 days after the rabies vaccination, a blood test is taken to make sure there is adequate protection.
• Pets can come back into the UK 6 months after the blood test if it is above the legal requirement.
• They are checked by the vet to make sure all legal requirements are met and a pet passport is issued.
• They are checked by the vet 2 days before travelling by plane or ferry to be sure they are fit for the journey.
• We also recommend that they are treated with frontline (official flea and tick treatment) and wormer before they travel so they don’t get any diseases, such as tick borne infections, while abroad.
• Pets can return to the UK without quarantine if all requirements are met.
